Nessel spending lots for audit

To the editor:
Those of you who came and voted at the reconvened (Nessel Township) annual meeting to increase the budget to $360,000 as the township board requested, instead of asking them to cut back, should know it was not enough.
They spent $374,879, or nearly $15,000 over budget,İSome members of the board now feel that we need a new garage-again. So if they get it passed we are looking in the neighborhood of half a million for next year. The state auditor has yet to do his (her) final report, but the preliminary report was interesting.İA couple of the things they found was that the checkbook for the township had not been reconciled with the bank for over 2 years.İMany checks were written with no supporting invoices. For the invoices that were tested, they were not approved for payment.İ
No ledgers were kept forİindividual funds. Reporting forms didİnot include activities of the Point Road Fund.İProperty taxes from the county were not included in a journal. Three invoices tested were paid late [against the law].İThey were not stamped paid.İThere is more, if you want to know, my number is (320) 358-3561. İİİ If you remember the board wanted to hire a private auditor to do the 2003 audit figuring that the state would be satisfied.İ I told them the state was obligated to 2000-2001-2002, so that would be $4,000 wasted, they passed the resolution anyway and that $4,000 became $6,300 for the private auditor, because like the state auditor, they could not find the same papers the state auditor could not find. As you know, all this research cost money.İThe lastİI heard the state bill was up to $9,000 and counting.İSo an audit for 3 years that would have cost $5,000 or $6,000, if all the documents were available, will now cost Nessel around $20,000.
