Tigers fall to Jaguars

The win streak stopped at two games for the Rush City boys basketball team last week, as the squad fell to Hinckley-Finlayson in a 69-45 game.

Rush City saw the game slip away early, as the Jaguars went on a 22-point tear in the first quarter and led 22-8 after one.

The Tigers battled back but still trailed 39-20 at the half. The score was 58-32 after three quarters before Rush City outscored Hinckley 13-11 in the fourth quarter for the 69-45 loss.

Head Coach Gary Dreissig said the difference came in three-point shots. ìHinckley-Finlayson went 11 of 16 and Rush City was 1 of 9,î he said. ìWhen you get outscored by 30 points from beyond the arc, your chances of winning are very slim.î

The Tigers were 18 of 33 for 54 percent in the two-point range but only 42 percent at the line, making 6 of 14.

Senior Kris Guentzel continues to showcase his improvement, leading the team with 16 points including going 8 of 9 from the field. He also led the team in rebounds with 8. Junior Kevin Bengtson chipped in 8 points and senior Brent Freeman and freshman Jerred Nelson added 7 each.

The squad is no 5-11 overall, 4-5 in the Great River Conference. This week, the Tigers were scheduled to face Onamia Tuesday and travel to Braham Friday, Feb. 20. The team returns home Monday, Feb. 23 to face East Central in a make-up game from Jan. 30.
