The Rush City girls basketball squad heads into its final week of play with a focus on next weekís subsection opening round.
The Tigers went 1-1 last week against two subsection opponents, earning its third win in four games.
The team edged Braham Feb. 10 in a 43-42 game, led by senior Mindy Scott with 10 points and went on to defeat Ogilvie Feb. 13 in a 60-21 slashing. A total of 12 players scored in the victory over Ogilvie, led by junior Breann Stottler with 14 points.
Last week, the Tigers fell to Pine City 62-51. The Dragons led 25-19 at the half and extended the lead with a 21-point third quarter to 46-32. Rush City outscored Pine City 19-16 in the fourth but it was a little too late.
ìWe have a couple of players who are really playing well but they canít carry the team,î Head Coach Stuart Lang said. ìWe needed everyone tonight and we didnít get it.î
Stottler led the team with 15 points, 5 assists and 5 rebounds. Sophomore Heather Dean had 8 points and senior Mindy Scott and junior Holly Grimes added 6 apiece.
The team rebounded with a 53-43 win over East Central Feb. 19. After a tie at 23-23 at the half, the Eagles took the 38-31 lead going into the fourth quarter. Rush City came back to score 22 points in the fourth quarter while holding East Central to 5 for the 10-point win.
The win was even more impressive considering the Tigers defeated the Great River Conference leader on East Centralís home court.
ìIt was an excellent team effort,î Lang said. ìWe played one of our best games of the year and hopefully now with everyone healthy we are peaking at the right time.î
Stottler and Dean both chipped in 17 points. Stottler also had 4 assists and 5 rebounds and Dean had 4 steals and 4 rebounds. Scott added 8 points.
The win improves the Tigers to 11-9 overall, 6-6 in the GRC. This week, the team was scheduled to face Onamia Tuesday and takes on Aitkin at home Friday, Feb. 27 to round out the regular season. Subsection 6AA quarterfinals are set for Thursday, March 6. Rush City comes in as the No. 6 seed and will face No. 3-seed Foley at Foley.
