Fletcher sets NB hoopís all-time scoring recordBy Barbara Brown With a free throw at the 4:07 mark of the first period gave senior Matt Fletcher his 1,263rd career point and broke the career scoring mark previously held by Brad Baumann. Fletcher, who signed with Southwest Minnesota State University during early signing time in November to play basketball for the college. Fletcher feels honored to have his name added to the North Branch record books. ìMatt is such an unselfish kid and he probably didnít even know how many points he needed,î said basketball Head Coach Bill Baumann. Baumann said Fletcherís main concern during a game or just at practice is how well the team works together and how their hard work shows on the court. Fletcher, a 6-foot, 2-inch 185 guard, recently was overheard by Baumann during a conversation with a teammate. The teammate had asked Fletcher how many points he had scored against Foley. Baumann said Fletcher answered that he did not know, all he knew was that the team won by 12 points. Baumann said he expects more good things to come out of Fletcherís athletic and personal endeavors. ìIím sure this is not the only record Matt will have by the time heís done.î Fletcher is the son of North Branch High School assistant principal Neil Fletcher and Carol Fletcher. ìMatt has great range and is an outstanding competitor and all-around athlete,î said Greg Stemen, Southwest Stateís head mens basketball coach. He helped lead the Vikings to a Rum River Conference championship in the 2003 season and the team was runner up in the 6AAA section. Fletcher personally earned accolades as an Associated Press All-State team honorable mention last year. He is a two-time first team All-Conference selection and is in good position to secure a slot on that team again this season. The honor roll student also plays tennis and football for North Branch High School. ©ECM Post Review |
