Two wins for NB boys hockey

The North Branch boys hockey team just keeps on winning. Last week, the victories came over Moose Lake and Princeton, as the Vikes improved to 7-5 on the year.

The squad skated to a 5-2 win over Moose Lake Jan. 26, out-shooting Moose Lake 20-14.

After a scoreless first period, the Vikings were first on the board at 13:05 remaining in the second.
Jake Kosky scored for the Vikes, assisted by Tony Watters.

Moose Lake tied the score, but the rest of the period was all North Branch as the visitors tallied 3 more goals.
Marty Yackel scored an unassisted goal, followed by 2 goals from Cory Husnik, off assists from Andy Kittleson (2) and Aaron Cedergren.

Moose Lake added its second goal in the third and Levi Disrud capped the scoring for the Vikes with a goal in the final minutes of the game.

The next day, the locals took on Princeton and edged the Tigers 4-3 in overtime.

Yackel opened the scoring off assists from Jake Hughes and Pat Hughes in the first period.

North Branch went up 2-0 in the second with a shorthanded goal from Jake Hughes before Princeton retaliated with 3 straight in the period for a 3-2 lead.
The Vikings tied the game with seconds remaining in the second period, off the stick of Jake Hughes. Neither team was able to score in the third, forcing an overtime period.

In the five minute overtime period, both goalies came up with key saves before Husnik found the net for North Branch, giving the Vikes a 4-3 win.

He was assisted by Disrud and Jake Hughes.
ìThis was a big confidence win for the team,î Head Coach Greg Lien said. ìThe team worked hard both defensively and offensively.î

This week, the team faces St. Michael-Albertville Friday, Feb. 6.
