Wrestlers still battle to improve

The North Branch wrestling team continues to fight injuries and illness this season and the affect is coming to light in the teamís scores.

In a Jan. 29 dual match against Mora-Pine City and Chisago, the Vikings lost.

Mora-Pine City won the first match 35-30.

Seven North Branch wrestlers won their matches. The results were: Josh Schwab, 119, decision; Dustin Allen, 135, fall; Vince Zaffke, 140, decision; Cody Gallmeier, 145, fall; Nathan Holmes, 160, forfeit; Sam Suparat, 171, won in overtime; and Jeremy Bergerson, 215, decision.
ěWe knew that both of the duals would be close tonight,î Head Coach Tony Aho commented.

He gave accolades to Suparat who wrestled out of his normal weight class of 160.

ěSuparat went up a weight and earned an overtime victory against a solid opponent,î Aho said. ěHe has been improving rapidly the last couple of weeks and is looking sharp against good competition.î

In the second round of the dual meet, North Branch took on Chisago Lakes.

Chisago won the match 38-32 with only six North Branch wrestlers winning their matches; most by forfeit.
Josh Schwab, 119, won by decision; Cody Gallmeier, 145, won by forfeit; Joe Lofboom, 152, won by technical fall; Zach Backus, 171, won by fall; Jeremy Bergerson, 215 and Jarrod Swanson, heavyweight, both won by forfeit.

Aho said he expected to see Jeff Holmgren and Greg Arnt return to the mats this week after recovering from injuries earlier this season.

The team was scheduled to wrestle Rush City at home on Feb. 3.
