Tiger wrestlers just miss sharing GRC titleRush City wrestling had an opportunity last week to share a piece of the Great River Conference title but the team fell just short of realizing that dream. The Tigers wrestled Mille Lacs Jan. 29 and proved they have what it takes to compete with some of the toughest teams around. After returning from behind at 18-3, the Tigers pulled up their score to finish the match 37-27, just losing to Mille Lacs and losing their shot at the title. The Tigers had a fighting chance before the last two matches of the night. At that time the score was separated by only one point, with Mille Lacs barely holding onto the lead at 28-27. However, with the lost of the last two matches, there was nothing Rush City could do. ìOur kids wrestled their guts out,î Head Coach Kevin Jensen said. ìWe thought we would get at least two or three pins, but we didnít and that proved to be the difference,î he said. Both wrestlers earned their 60th career wins. ìHe wrestled a state entrant as tough as anyone,î Jensen said. Earlier last week, on Jan. 26, Rush City traveled to Princeton and had been handed another loss. James Fleming, a freshman at 125, wrestled well and got a nice win finishing 7-2 over Jake Irwin. Sophomore Matt Wuorinen won his first match of the season in the 130 weight, taking Casey Quinn 5-1. Adam Morris got his 16th win of the season at 140, where he wrestled Brad Aasen and won 10-5. Senior Tim Morris won his 18th at 152, beating Chad Burkholder 10-1. ìThe close duals are tough to lose when you give up so many pins, especially when you donít get as many pins to offset them,î Jensen said. The Tigers were to wrestle North Branch Tuesday night. Then, Aitkin hosts the annual junior varsity and junior high school tournament on Feb. 9 starting at 2 p.m. ©ECM Post Review |
