NB wrestler earns 100 career wins

By Barbara Brown

John Buchananís name was recorded in the North Branch High School record books last week when he became only the second wrestler in school history to earn 100 wins.

Buchanan pinned his Hinckley-Finlayson opponent in the 145 weight class during the Jan. 6 tri-meet against Hinckley and Spring Lake Park.
He said prior to the match he was fully aware that a win would drop him into the annals of school history.

ìI think I went out there more aggressive,î he said.
Buchanan had not faced the opponent before because when the team wrestled Hinckley earlier this season, the wrestler was down two weight classes.

ìWhen I got started in 7th grade, I never really thought Iíd be good enough,î Buchanan said Saturday morning before the North Branch Invitational tournament.

ìWith the help of Coach Aho, Iíve gotten better,î he said.

Buchanan went on to make a good showing and add to his pin and win records at the Saturday North Branch Wrestling Invitational. Although the team took fifth place, Buchanan was champion of the 135 weight class.
