NB girls even up record with win over MilacaFollowing two losses in the Simley tournament, the North Branch girls basketball squad came back with a pair of wins last week. The Vikes faced Spring Lake Park Jan. 6 and came away with a 58-54 win. North Branch started strong and held a 10-2 lead before Spring Lake came back to tie it at 12-12 to end the first quarter. The Vikings led by 6 at halftime at 27-21, but saw Spring Lake rebound with 20 points in the third quarter to take a 41-33 lead into the final quarter. ìJenny had a great game and is really becoming a force for other teams to have to deal with,î Head Coach Dan Schindler said. ìRachel Brown had some key steals and assists in the fourth quarter in the comeback.î Anderson led with 31 points in the game, while freshman Gabrielle Olson chipped in 12 and junior Megan Stegmeir added 8. Both teams battled for the lead throughout the first half as North Branch earned the 33-27 lead at the half against Milaca last Friday. ìWe were pretty happy with the way we played the first half,î Schindler said. ìWe thought Milaca had made some tough shots and we felt if we just could keep up our intensity, we would wear them down.î The strategy worked, as North Branch racked up 25 points in the second half and allowed only 11 from Milaca, going away with the 58-38 win. ìThis was a nice team win with a lot of girls contributing to the win,î Schindler said. The wins put the Vikes in fourth place in the conference with a 3-2 record, 6-6 overall. St. Michael-Albertville leads the Rum River at 5-0 and 10-1 overall. North Branch faces St. Michael-Albertville in a home game Friday, Jan. 16. ©ECM Post Review |
