Grapplers take third at tourney

Rush City wrestling coach Kevin Jensen had a goal for his team as they went into the Hinckley-Finlayson tournament Jan. 10 ñ to finish in the top two positions.

Despite extremely strong finishes in most of the weight classes, the Tigers were edged out of second place by a persistent Chisago Lakes team in the final round.

Minneapolis Edison took first in the 8-team tournament with 218 points, followed by Chisago Lakes in second with 183. Rush City came in third with 180 points.

Minneapolis Lutheran finished fourth with 173 points, Hinckley-Finlayson was fifth with 127 points, Trinity School at River Ridge was sixth, Robinsdale Armstrong was seventh and Granite City Baptist was eighth.
The highlight match of the tourney for the Tigers were Adam Morris at 140 lbs. Morris defeated his opponent from Robinsdale Armstrong to take the championship. ìIt was the first time he has been the champion in a tournament,î Jensen said.

Six other Rush City wrestlers advanced to the final round and earned second place in the tourney.

They were: Richard Marohn (119 lbs.), Matt Wuorinen (130 lbs.), Zach Sowman (145 lbs.), Tim Morris (152 lbs.), Mike Wuorinen (160 lbs.) and Scott England (171 lbs.).

At other weights, Tommy Fleming was sixth at 103 lbs., Nick Potter was fifth at 112 lbs., James Fleming was fourth at 125 lbs., Tim Allerton was third at 135 lbs. and Josiah Allen was third at 215 lbs.

ìWe are wrestling better at every dual and every tourney,î Jensen said.
The squad is now 1-1 in the Great River Conference and 3-3 overall. This week, the Tigers battled Aitkin Tuesday in a dual meet and host Eden Valley-Watkins and Royalton in a triangular Thursday, Jan. 15.
