Tigers split pair in GRC, move to 3-7

The Rush City boys basketball team split a pair of games last week to Great River Conference opponents, defeating Onamia Jan. 16 before falling to Mora the next day.

Against Onamia, the Tigers were trailing 27-22 at the half after getting off the a tough start. Head Coach Gary Dreissig said the squad trailed by as many as 11 points in the second quarter.

Rush City came out fighting in the second half and chipped away at the Onamia lead. The Tigers still trailed 37-34 after three quarters, but were able to take the lead for the first time with three minutes remaining in the game.

ìWe hit key free throws after that to win by 6,î Dreissig said. Rush City won 50-44 for its third win of the season.
ìI was impressed by the way we stayed focused and never panicked,î Dreissig said.

Senior Kevin Bengtson had a big night for the Tigers, leading with 17 points. He also had 2 rebounds, 2 steals and 1 assist on the night.

Senior Kellin Sybrant added 11 points, while senior Kris Guentzel had 7 and senior Tim Karnick had 6. Karnick led the team with 11 rebounds.

ìWe again had a big night on the boards, outrebounding Onamia by 9 and getting 19 offensive rebounds,î Dreissig said.

Rush City 43 Mora 50

The next day, Rush City faced Mora in its third road game in a row and second game in two days. The Mustangs took the momentum early with a big 13-2 lead in the first quarter, and were able to sustain the lead throughout the game.

Rush City trailed 22-19 at the half, but matched Mora 12-12 in the third quarter to stay within three at 34-31 going into the final quarter.

Mora sealed the win by outscoring Rush City 16-12 in the fourth for the 50-43 win.

ìOur defense overall was again great, but when you shoot only 23 percent from the field your chances of winning are pretty slim,î Dreissig said.

The bright spot on offense was senior Josh Erickson, who came in off the bench and hit 5 three-pointers for the Tigers to lead the scoring with 16 points. Karnick added 11 points and Guentzel had 5. Karnick led again in rebounds with 8.

The games bring the Tigersí record to 3-7 overall, 2-2 in the GRC.

This week, the squad returned home Tuesday to face Braham and then travels to Ogilvie Friday, Jan. 23.
