NB wrestlers plagued with injuries, illnessBy Danielle Strenke It has not been an easy season for the North Branch wrestling team. But throughout a season plagued with injuries and illness, the Vikes have continued to win matches and work hard. Head Coach Tony Aho has had challenges in every meet as he attempts to fill holes left by wrestlers out with broken bones and illnesses. The latest blow for the team is senior wrestler John Buchanan, who is out for the rest of the season after breaking his ankle against Coon Rapids at the Cambridge Invite last Saturday. Just the week before, Buchanan had become North Branchís second wrestler in history to earn 100 wins and was clearly on the road to state. The loss is added to a growing list ñ two-time state entrant Jeff Holmgren out indefinitely following knee surgery this week, Greg Arnt who missed much of the season and is still out with a broken arm and Joe Lofboom, out indefinitely with a broken hand. As Aho worked on the roster for Tuesdayís match against Braham, he knew it would be tough. ìWe have a couple guys out sick this week, and one who lost their grandmother,î he said. Through the adversity, Aho said the team is working hard. ìThe kids are resilient,î he said. ìTheyíre working hard to fill those holes and Iím proud of them. But it sure tests their resolve.î Aho said there are a few wrestlers who will be able to step in and take Buchananís slot. Buchanan wrestled at both the 135 and 145 weights at times for the squad. ©ECM Post Review |
