Farmers deserve comfortable future

To the editor:

In last weekís paper Michael Madden of Center City wrote a letter to the editor regarding property owners outrage over the protection of land by (the three) county commissioners Montzka, Walker and Olseen.

He stated in his letter ìPerhaps the great anger publicly voiced can also come with the personal acknowledgement that they are only concerned first and foremost with themselves and their own particular needs.î

I would like to tell Mr. Madden that yes, of course, people are concerned about themselves and their needs. Farmers and landowners have invested in their land, some 50 to 75 years ago.

They have paid for their land many times over with loans and interest, with some good years and some bad years.
They have paid the taxes on the land, they have taken care of their land because it is and always has been their investment and their only retirement.
They are concerned about themselves because this is all they have.

If your retirement was taken away from you wouldnít you be concerned about yourself? Or are only the ones with corporate jobs and 401ks entitled to a comfortable retirement?

Please try to comprehend other peopleís lives you obviously know noting about. As youíre driving through the county and admiring all the beautiful land, remember it does belong to someone else who deserves a future just as you do.
