OpinionBuckle up, pleaseOne really shouldnít have to tell people to buckle their seat belts any more, it should be second nature. Still, there are plenty of folks who just refuse to use them. There were enough accidents last week, and continuing this week, to prove that the belt should be buckled. Roll-overs, spin outs and crashes abound in this wintry weather. All can be made less severe if the passengers and driver are wearing seat belts. For instance, a young woman some years ago was diligent in wearing her seatbelt and it probably saved her from head injuries or worse when she rolled her car and landed in a ditch upside down. There she hung still belted in screaming for help, but none-the-less uninjured, because she was neither thrown from the vehicle nor crushed through the sun roof of her car which was demolished. Wise are the young people who are learning to use seat belts as part of the routine of driving. They are to be commended. Wise are the parents who are placing babies and children in secure seats in the vehicles, even if they are cumbersome and confining. Wise are the adults who automatically buckle up when they get in the car, even though they might grumble about wrinkled clothing and such. Unfortunately there are still some who refuse to buckle up for any number of reasons. And there are those who donít think you can get injured while driving slower in town. Well, I once saw a young woman leave her face imprint on the windshield of a car that was going through Cambridge, well under 30 miles an hour. Imagine what that can do to a beautiful young face. Remembering one of my daughterís blue-ribbon 4-H project posters, youíre ìbetter buckled than buried.î ©ECM Post Review |
