Girls win two RRC

After losing the first two Rum River Conference games of the season, the North Branch girls basketball team has finished the first half of conference games this year with a 6-3 record.

Last week, the Vikes added two wins to the tally by defeating Zimmerman Jan. 20 and Big Lake Jan. 23.

North Branch 83 Zimmerman 33
After taking the 18-16 edge after one quarter, North Branch pulled ahead of Zimmerman last Tuesday with 22 points in the second quarter, while allowing only 4 for a 40-20 halftime lead.

The Vikes didnít let up in the second half, outscoring Zimmerman 24-2 in the third quarter and 19-11 in the fourth for the 50-point win at 83-33.

Head Coach Dan Schindler was able to go to his bench for much of the second half. ìIt was nice to get them some playing time,î he said.

In addition to 9 of the teamís 12 players scoring, four players had career scoring highs: junior Megan Stegmeir, 10 points, freshman Tiffany Good, 9 points, senior Kara Lundeen, 8 points and junior Ashley Klein, 6 points. Schindler said senior Jennah Engen, junior Jenny Stenberg and sophomore Jill Vanden Heuvel also had quality minutes off the bench.

Junior Jenny Anderson led the Vikings with 20 points and 10 rebounds.

Freshman Gabrielle Olson had 9 assists in the win.

North Branch 41 Big Lake 23
The Vikes outscored Big Lake 11-4 in the opening quarter last Friday before Big Lake tied it at 14-14 at the half.

North Branch regrouped in the second half and pulled ahead 35-20 after three quarters and added 6 in the fourth to seal the 41-23 win.

ìWe played four quarters of very good defensive basketball,î Schindler said.

ìIt was our best defensive effort of the year. Offensively we played three quarters. We just had a bad second quarter.

ìPart of it was we took some bad shots and the other part was the shots weren't going in.î

Anderson, Good and Hasleiet took over scoring from the inside and outside in the third quarter; Good and Hasleiet with big outside shots and Anderson dominating the paint, Schindler said.

Anderson led the team again with 22 points and 8 rebounds. Senior Katie Hasleiet added 8 points and senior Rachel Brown had 5. Good added 4
Olson tallied 7 assists and 4 rebounds.

The wins improve the Vikes to 6-3 in the RRC, 9-7 overall. The team sits in third place in the conference.
St. Michael-Albertville leads the conference with a 9-0 record.

This week, the team was scheduled to take on Foley Tuesday, and will travel to Princeton Friday before returning home Tuesday, Feb. 3 to face Mora.

In earlier contests, the Vikes have lost to both Foley and Princeton this year, but defeated Mora.
