OpinionNew truck wonít fit in garageTo the editor: NESSEL NEWS -Something good happened in October after the treasurer resigned. The board advertised for a new treasurer and did interviews for the job.ÝOne man, I believe he is on the school board for Braham, said the interviews should be done in private, but it was soon learned that the law says it is to be done at an open meeting.ÝOne of the ìgood old boysî was interviewed for the job, but he really did not have the qualifications that the Nessel Board needed.Ý A lady named Mary Rahman was also interviewed.ÝIt was apparent to everyone that she was so overqualified, that one of the board members, Ray Henderson, offered a motion to hire her on the spot.ÝI am sure that the rest of the board thought so too, but that meant voting against one of the good old boys.Ý You could see the wheels turning while they hesitated making a second to the motion.ÝFinally, after much thought, common sense prevailed, but it was humorous.ÝWith our new clerk and treasurer, Nessel Township operations will be going from the horse and buggy days to the computer age, no less. At the December board meeting a supervisor, Myron Twingstrom, said that we needed to remodel the garage and put a new addition on the building, because they sold the old truck, got a good deal on a new one ($21,000), but it turned out to be too big to fit in the garage.Ý That the employees couldnít walk around it to do the maintenance.ÝBesides, the toilet was not up to code and we need a new one.ÝWhen I asked if it was up to code 6 months ago when OSHA inspected the building, why is it not up to code now?Ý I was told this is not an open forum and I could not speak (didnít get an answer either).ÝStill, when one of the good old boys asked a question 5 minutes later, it apparently was an open forum.ÝIt has been going on that way for years, so you know going in only friends and relatives are allowed to speak freely. It would appear that if they decide to do this, the good deal they got on the truck is going from $21,000 to maybe $100,000 or $200,000, for the truck, who knows?Ý Wouldnít it make sense to sell this truck like they did the other one and get a smaller truck like the one they had? When you start grinding your teeth over this, try beef jerky, otherwise you will grind your teeth down to the gums before the next election in November. Tom Hennemann,ÝRush City ©ECM Post Review |
