NB wrestlers take 6th at Tartan tourney
The North Branch wrestlers continue to improve at every meet, including impressive individual showings at the Tartan Tournament Jan. 3. The Vikings earned 122 points for sixth place in the 8-team tourney. The highlight of the day was Jeremy Bergerson taking the championship at 215 lbs. ìJeremy breezed through his weight class and looks like he may get another shot at the state tournament if he continues to improve as the season progresses,î Head Coach Tony Aho said. John Buchanan, 140 lbs., wrestled to the championship match and earned second place. Other top finishers were Jeff Holmgren, 125 lbs., third place and Zack Backus, 171 lbs., third place. ìZack is proving to be our most improved wrestler so far,î Aho said. ìHe pushes himself every time he gets out on the mat.î Boyd Suparat earned fourth at 112 lbs. ìBoyd continues to impress people with aggressiveness and maturity beyond his years,î Aho said. Cody Gallmeier, 145 lbs., took fourth and Ryan Decorsey, 152 lbs., took fifth. ìRyan is another young wrestler who is willing to go out there and take chances and try some of the things we have been working on in practice,î Aho said. At 189 lbs., Matt Davidson took fifth and at heavyweight, Jarrod Swanson earned sixth. Aho was pleased with the improvement in all the wrestlers. ìAll but two wrestlers won at least one match, and many won two matches,î he said. This week, the squad took on Spring Lake Park and Hinckley-Finlayson Tuesday, travels to a triangular in Princeton Thursday and returns home for the North Branch Invite Saturday, Jan. 10 starting at 10:30 a.m.
