To the editor:
A big thank-you to the Grand Cinema of Hinckley for bringing the award-winning documentary ěFahrenheit 9/11î to East Central Minnesota. It was nice to be able to support a local theater and restaurant.
Seeing this compelling film reminded me how much our democracy depends on its citizens demanding and being told the truth. I fear we have become too complacent in this regard. James Baldwin, the great American writer, while a young preacher, wrote, ěPeople who shut their eyes to reality simply invite their own destruction ...î
At the end of the film, as applause broke out throughout the theater, I felt a renewed sense of patriotism in knowing that we live in a country where voices of dissent are still allowed and appreciated. We certainly would not have become the great country we are today had there not been Americans along the way willing to speak the truth at whatever cost.
What a fitting way to celebrate Independence Day, listening to Americans telling the truth.
