Golden Gophers 4-H turns 70

To the editor:

The year 2004 is a milestone for the Golden Gophers 4-H Club of Harris.

Originally the Huskies, the club changed itís name to Golden Gophers in 1937 after the U of Mís famous football team. This was one of the two original Chisago County 4-H organizations. The first meetings were held in membersí homes. In the mid 1950ís, they started meeting regularly at the Harris Legion Hall. Now we meet at the First Lutheran Church in Harris. We currently have 30 members.

Weíve had many club leaders over the years along with parents lending many helping hands. Our members have made many accomplishments such as Jr. Leadership conference, won State Fair trips, held Chisago County 4-H ambassador positions, and weíve received county Club of the Year many times.

We have had many Community Pride projects. The most recent ones were Santa Day in Harris where we provided a Shopping Mall for children who wanted to buy an inexpensive gift for a loved one. We support the Food Shelf. We have made handicapped accessible walkways, and have done landscaping at the Chisago County Fairgrounds.

To celebrate our anniversary, we had a float at the North Branch Midsummer parade. Be sure you look for us at the Chisago County Fair parade, July 18. We will also be having a booth in the 4-H Building at the fair. Anyone who wants to share memories with Golden Gophers 4-H, please visit our booth and sign the guest book there.
We want to thank our sponsors who helped us purchase T-shirts and finance our float: Advanced Concrete Sawing, Branch Manufacturing, Caryl & Company, KGL Farms, Nelsonís Market, North Country Coffee, North Country Cuts, Oak Inn, Olson Power & Equipment, Perryís Auto Salon, and S&C Bank.
