Prairie Day celebration set for July 17

Posted: 7/14/04

A second Prairie Day celebration for individuals and families is planned for Saturday, July 17, by Prairie Restorations, Inc., at its Princeton headquarters.

Company President Ron Bowen said it will be tough to top the first such event held last year when ìperfect weather conditions and a beautiful display of native prairie grasses and flowers were enjoyed by more than 300 people.î

Scheduled for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., this yearís activities will feature hay rides through remnant and restored prairies, woodlands and wetlands. Staff will lead tours and plant identification walks. Representatives of the University of Minnesota Raptor Center will display live eagles, hawks, owls and falcons between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Dave Cook of Princeton will be back with Lucy, the buffalo, and possibly a new baby buffalo, as well. John Moriarty of Ramsey County Parks and Recreation, will bring an exhibit of Minnesota snakes and turtles. Prairie Day participants of all ages will be invited to find their way through a tall grass prairie maze. A blacksmith and photographer will be on hand to demonstrate their turn-of-the-century trades.

Special games, bug-catching contests, prizes and crafts are planned for young children. While all activities are free, snacks and lunch concessions will be on sale.
