North Branch High School senior Britt Baumann won two matches to open post-season play in the section tournament last week and advances to the section finals Wednesday, June 2 at Chisago Lakes.
Baumann will go into the tournament as the no. 3 seed, facing the No. 2 seed in his first match.
Baumann earned one of two points for the Vikings in the opening of the section tournament May 24 against Forest Lake. Unfortunately, Forest Lake came up with 5 points to eliminate North Branch from section play.
Baumannís match against Luke Odegaard was their second meeting of the season ñ Odegaard defeated Baumann the first time.
ìIt was definitely a different match this time,î Head Coach Tom McLaughlin said. ìBritt was able to hit his passing shots and dictate the style of play a bit more this time to win 7-5, 6-4. Luke had received the no. 1 seed for the south subsections so this was important for Britt in preparing for section play.î
The no. 1 doubles team of Cody Ekstrom and Joey Sung won for North Branch in two sets, 6-4, 6-4. ìThey played well,î McLaughlin said.
Earlier in the week, the Vikes downed St. Francis 5-2.
Baumann won his match, 6-1, 6-0. David Stark and Blake Anderson also won for singles, shutting out their opponents 6-0, 6-0.
The no. 3 doubles team of Jeromie Hamann and Ben Gertz won in two sets, 6-3, 6-3.
ìJeromie has been an anchor for the team at third doubles,î McLaughlin said. ìHeís helped his partner learn the double game and worked very hard at improving his own game. He tends to be quiet and reserved but heís been a team leader all year.î
