Neither irresponsible nor greedy

To the editor:
In a letter written to the editor March 11, 2004, the writer referred to land owners of Chisago County as ģirresponsibleī and ģgreedy.ī
My husband and I purchased our farm in Amador Township in 1977. Over the years we purchased more acreage. I do not consider myself or my husband ģirresponsible or greedy.ī
We have worked very hard to raise a family, provide for that family and make a living from the land. To make payments on the farm, my husband worked full-time outside the farm. I shared the responsibility of
raising the children, clipping coupons for groceries, watching the animals, assisting with
calving and farrowing, feeding and watering the animals.
I would shop garage sales for clothing for the family and did canning of the vegetables from the garden.
The money we saved by doing this helped to pay for annual soil testing and replacement of minerals back into the soil.
We pay annual taxes on the land. We pay for the fertilizer, we work to prevent erosion. We are very conscious of water pollution as our drinking water comes from the farm well. Trees are planted in the pastures and grasses replanted as needed.
How easy it seems for you, who do no know me, or the way my husband and I operate our farm, to put negative labels on myself and peers.
Explain to me how it is democratic for the county board of commissioners to implement a moratorium on my land without holding public hearings? How is it undemocratic for me to attend a meeting with other land owners so that we may develop a persuasive argument for presentation to the board of commissioners? What are you so afraid of that you need to resort to accusation and name calling?
I am afraid that it is that specific mind set that polarizes people of different opinions and prevents working for the good of all.
