Superintendent goes to Capitol

Posted: 3/24/04

North Branch schools will open two days earlier than usual if a request by Superintendent Dr. Robert Stepaniak is approved by the Legislature.

Rep. Pete Nelson introduced a bill before the state House education policy committee asking that North Branch be allowed to differ from its regular school schedule and open two days earlier.

Dr. Stepaniak was at the committee hearing last Thursday, March 18, to give three minutes of testimony about why the district needs the change.

He said the opening of the new school means the administration and teachers need as much time as possible inside the building at the beginning of the school year to make sure everything runs smoothly.

The early opening would mean the year would end two days earlier for summer break, Dr. Stepaniak said.
ìItís the same amount of school. We just have to get legislative action to make it happen.î

The early start also will not cost the district any more money than opening at the regular time, Dr. Stepaniak said.

The request has to go through Senate hearings before it is approved by the Legislature.
