North Branch ended its regular wrestling season with a disappointing showing at the section tournament last week at Grand Rapids.
Only one wrestler advanced to the championship match ñ Jeremy Bergerson. He finished runner-up to advance to the State Wrestling Tournament for the second straight season.
The second highest qualifier for the team was Sam Suparat, who placed fifth at 160 lbs.
Josh Schwab, 119 lbs., Joe Lofboom, 152 lbs., Zach Backus, 171 lbs. and Corey Haley at 189 lbs. all finished sixth in their brackets.
Jeff Holmgren and Cody Gallmeir also wrestled well, Head Coach Tony Aho said, but both lost matches in the final minutes they had been winning.
Despite the low finishes, Aho was proud of how the team did. ìThe guys who placed all wrestled above their seed coming into the meet,î he said. ìThey werenít scared of anybody and we now know we can catch them.î
Bergerson starts the state tournament Thursday, March 4, facing Jordan Stracke of St. Cloud Tech.
