Meghan Grandahl, a 16-year-old from Wyoming, was called a hero Tuesday by Chisago County Sheriff Todd Rivard.

Grandahl earned that title April 23 after she located a 2-year-old Anoka girl who had wandered away from a pre-school field trip group.

Grandahl works at Pinehaven farm and cares for the children of the farm owners. She said she joined the search party shortly after it began looking. Grandahl found the child sleeping under a pine tree more than a mile from her original starting point. The search lasted more than two hours.

Sgt. Karl Schrek, the Chisago County deputy on the scene at the time, thanked Grandahl and expressed the gratitude of the department during a brief ceremony in the Chisago County Sheriffís Office.

Grandahl received a letter of commendation from Rivard and a plaque with a certificate of appreciation.

ìSo often these days people see something happening and they donít want to get involved. They donít want to bother,î Rivard said. ìIím glad you did and her parents are glad you did.î
