Two athletes from North Branch High School and one from Rush City High School competed in the Minnesota state cross country meet on Nov. 6 at St. Olaf College in Northfield.
North Branch sophomore Nick Ramberg and 7th grader Haley Hasleiet ran in their first state competition, while Rush City senior Christine Frandsen capped off her high school career with a second consecutive appearance in statewide competition.
The boys race is 5000 meters and the girls is 4000 meters.
Ramberg placed 78th in a field of 153 with a time of 17:29.9 in the boys AA competition.
The winner in that division was senior Yahya Imam of Marshall with a time of 15:39.9.
Hasleiet placed 121st in a field of 150 runners in the girls AA division with a time of 17:14.2. The winner in that division was Elizabeth Yetzer, a junior from Lakeville, who turned in a time of 14:28.4.
Frandsen finished 50th in a field of 154 runners in the girls A division with a time of 16:03. Last year she finished 78th out of 158 runners with a time of 16:04.9.
This yearís winner in the girls A division was senior Nicole Calabrese of Kingsland Spring Valley with a time of 14:29.6.
ìChristine ran a real nice race today,î said Coach Kevin Smith. ìShe went out from the start very hard and covered her first mile in sub 6-minute pace. She passed three competitors as she kicked in the last 50 meters. Coach Vaughn and myself were pleased with both the effort and the result.î
Smith added that competition at state is more difficult than during the season, primarily because of the large number of runners close together.
ìIn other races you have much more breathing room. At state the pressure is on to keep your pace or get passed,î Smith said.
ìChristine had a good race plan and executed it well. She will be very tough to replace next season, but she is our only senior girl so we have a lot of experience returning.î
