Shoot only if your target is visible

Posted: 11/10/04

From the DNR

The Minnesota Dept. of Natural Resources (DNR) urges deer hunters to carefully identify their targets and make sure they have a safe backstop before they pull the trigger.

Minnesotaís firearms deer season opened last Saturday, Nov. 6. Deer hunting is one of the stateís most popular hunting traditions, with an estimated 475,000 hunters expected to go afield on opening day.

Hunting remains one of the safest outdoor recreational activities. Hunters contribute to this safety record by practicing good firearm etiquette. Taking your best shot at the right time ensures a safe and productive hunt.

ìUntil your target is fully visible and in good light, donít even raise your gun,î said Capt. Mike Hammer, DNR Enforcement Education Officer. ìMany hunting accidents occur in low light conditions. Know what is in front of and behind your target and determine that you have a safe backstop or background since the bullet may pass through the primary target and strike whatever is behind it. Shooting at moving deer is especially a concern as backstops can change rapidly. Safety is your primary concern, bagging a deer is secondary.î

Persons hunting deer also need to keep track of buildings, roadways, and other hunters. Donít ever shoot at a sound. It may be a child, a hunter, or an innocent bystander.

When hunting, know the identifying features of the game youíre after. Never shoot at flat hard surfaces, such as water, rocks, or steel because of ricochets.

ìBe certain of your target and your line of fire,î said Hammer. ìKeep your safety on, finger off the trigger and outside the trigger until ready to shoot.î

Deer hunters are also reminded to:
ï treat every firearm with the same respect due a loaded firearm; always keep your muzzle pointed in a safe direction.
ï be sure that the barrel and action are clear of obstructions.
ï wear fluorescent (blaze orange) for your own protection and the safety of other people.
ï never load or unload firearms around others.
ï never climb a tree, go into a stand, or jump a ditch with a loaded firearm; never pull a firearm toward you by the muzzle.
ï always ask permission before entering private land, and as a guest of the landowner, act accordingly.
ï store firearms and ammunition separately beyond the reach of children and careless adults.
ï avoid alcoholic beverages and other mood-altering drugs before or while shooting.
Hunters should refer to the big game hunting section of the 2004 Minnesota Hunting and Trapping Regulations Handbook for detailed information concerning deer hunting regulations, or call 1-888-MINNDNR (646-6367) for more information.
