Obituary Posted: 10/15/04
Bessie Elizabeth Gessler was the first born child to Joseph and Barbara (nee: Folk) Hubeny. Bessie was born in North Judson, Ind. on Feb. 11, 1906. She attended school in North Judson for 12 years and played on the girlís baseball team.
Bessieís parents ran a restaurant in North Judson and being the oldest child Bessie helped in the restaurant as well as cared for her younger siblings.
The family lost their restaurant to a fire, and then moved to a farm where mint was their main crop.
After high school Bessie decided to move to Chicago to seek employment, it was there she met Walter Gessler. The couple was united in marriage on May 1, 1925 in Chicago and was blessed with three children.
They continued to visit her parentís farm as often as they could. In 1946 Walter and Bessie moved their family to Valparaiso, Ind. Bessie found employment at the Sears Catalog Dept. and made many new friends at work and in the community. Bessie was very involved in her community, serving in school programs and being a band and baseball Mom. She also worked with the Democratic Party and taught first aid for the Red Cross, homemakers, and church.
Her last place of employment was at Valparaiso University where she was a baker. Bessie retired and in 1974 moved to live on Bone Lake in Wisconsin. She again made many new friends and became involved in her new community and church. Above everything else her family was her dearest possession and would do anything possible for them.
On Saturday evening, Oct. 2, 2004, Bessie passed away at the Golden Age Manor in Amery, Wisc. at the age of 98.
Her husband Walter, daughter Lorraine, son Walter, one great-grandchild, brothers Victor and Joseph, and sister Ella Mae Adams preceded her in death.
She will be deeply missed by her daughter Betty Mae (Charles) Cannon, seven grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, and many other loving relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Oct. 9, at the Georgetown Lutheran Church in rural Balsam Lake, Wisc. with Pastor Neal Weltzin officiating. Interment was held Tuesday, Oct. 12, at the Graceland Cemetery in Valparaiso, Inc. Arrangements were made with the Williamson Funeral Home in Amery, Wisc.
