The 9th grade volleyball team captured first place at its own invitational Sept. 27 with an 8-2 record.
Spring Lake Park placed second with a record of 7-3.
The Vikings defeated St. Francis and North Branch 2 by scores of 2-0 before falling to Spring Lake Park 0-2.
In the last two rounds the Vikings defeated Chisago Lakes and Moose Lake 2-0.
On Oct. 2 the team traveled to Duluth Central and took first place with a record of 5-0.
In pool play the Vikings defeated Proctor 2-0, Duluth Denfield 2-1 and Hermantown 2-0.
In the semifinals North Branch beat Duluth Marshall 2-0 before knocking off host Duluth Central in the championship match 2-0.
The team record is 16-3.
In varsity play, the team finished the week at 2-3.
On Oct. 7 the Vikings defeated Zimmerman 3-0 in a conference match.
Middle hitters Jenny Anderson and Kaia Nyberg led the team with 6 kills each, followed by Megan Ranger with 5. The team had a season high 17 serving aces.
On Oct. 8-9 the Vikings participated in the highly competitive Lakeville tournament.
The Vikings played Lakeville in their first match, losing 2-0 to Lakevilleís power attacks and strong defense.
The Vikings came up short in rounds 2 and 3 against Winona and Burnsville, respectively, losing 2-0 in each game.
The last match of the tourney saw the Vikings pull out a win against Hastings. Coach Jim VanEerden said the team passed as well as at any point this season, leading to a potent offense.
Defensive specialists Kelsey Vichorek and Kali Ramberg led the passing. Anderson led the team in kills with 7, and Kacie Ramberg added 4 serving aces.
ìI hope that by playing such quality teams now we will have an edge when it comes to postseason sectional play. Only time will tell,î VanEerden said.
The North Branch JV team finished the Lakeville tournament at 2-2 with a 10th place showing out of 16 teams.
Up next: Oct. 14 at St. Michael-Albertville, 7 p.m. and Oct. 19 at Princeton, 7 p.m.
