The Rush City Tigers dominated Hinckley Finlayson 3-0 on Sept. 9 to remain undefeated at home. That, and a third place finish at the Pine City Invitational Sept. 11, brings their overall record to 5-2, surpassing last yearís 4-win season.
In the Hinckley Finlayson contest, individual match scores were 25-20, 25-14 and 25-16.
In the first match the Tigers battled back from an 18-14 deficit to take the lead for good at 21-20. They never trailed in the second and third matches, bursting to a 5-0 lead in game two before the Jaguars scored.
The Tigers scored first in the third match and took the lead for good at 4-3.
Senior Breann Stottler came up big with 11 of 11 serves, 3 aces and 3 kills. Juniors Tasha Truskolaski and Shannon Grimes had 11 of 12 and 14 of16 serving, respectively, and 2 aces apiece. Grimes had 3 kills.
In the Pine City tourney the Tigers bested Luck, Wis. 2-1, Barnum 2-1 and Pine City 2-0. Coach Eric Telander said, ìWe were a little disappointed not to be playing in the championship match, but overall were excited about the girlsí performance and third place finish.î
Telander and Coach Michele Kirby noted that the team is playing very well together as a unit. ìThis is the group Iíve been wating for. Iíve been coaching them for three years. Everyone is contributing,î Kirby said.
The Tigers have a 1-1 record in the Great River Conference.
