Itís not always the guys in the cars who put their lives on the line at a bang ëem up demolition derby. Demolition derby official Dave Schleusner of Amery, Wisc., was injured Sunday, Aug. 29, at the Grantsburg fairgrounds when he went to the aid of a driver who was being burned with hot steam when a ìwhizzer hoseî got bent. Schleusner, it was reported, jumped into the pit and used his flag to bend the pipe away from the driver. As Schleusner stepped to the side of the car he was struck by another car backing toward the steaming car. In the accident, Schleusnerís pelvis was broken in 14 pieces and his leg was broken.
There will be a benefit fund- raiser Saturday, Sept. 25 at the fairgrounds in Grantsburg, Wisc., for Schleusner.
The Dave Schleusner Benefit fund has been set up at Community Bank in Grantsburg, according to Bruce Scheider, fair board member and leading derby worker. The fund-raiser is being sponsored by the fair board and Schleusner's friends.
For more information about the benefit, contact Chet Newman at the Burnett County Sentinel (715) 463-2341.
