Volleyball breaks into win column

The volleyball Vikings made a dramatic turnaround last week, winning 4 of 5 games, including a third place finish in the North Branch Invitational on Sept. 18.

The banner week gives the Vikings a record of 4-6 after starting the season 0-5.

The week began with a 3-1 victory over conference rival Chisago Lakes on Sept.16. Match scores were 25-22, 25-29, 23-25 and 25-15.

ìI could see a renewed dedication from some of the players at practices this week,î said Coach Jim VanEerden.

ìOn Thursday the team played with such energy, which was helped by the great home crowd. It was a lot of fun to see them play so well.î

The North Branch Invitational featured teams from Bemidji, Roseville, Duluth Central, St. Francis, Sartell, Moose Lake and Proctor.

Sartell defeated Bemidji for the tournament championship.

The Vikings handily won their first round game 2-0 against Duluth Central, 25-21 and 25-22.

Their only loss in the tourney came in round two against Bemidji, 2-0. Both individual match scores were 18-25. Bemidji place second in the tourney.

In round three the Vikings defeated Roseville 2-1, bouncing back from a tough 25-27 match one loss to win 25-13 and 15-6.

In the consolation round the Vikings beat Moose Lake 2-1; individual game scores were 25-19, 28-30 and 15-9.

VanEerden attributed the turnaround to two factors: much improved passing and trying some players in new positions.

Kali Ramberg has moved to back row defense, which VanEerden said has helped passing, while sophomore setter Megan Ranger has moved to the outside for a more potent attack.

In addition, freshman setter Cori Fairbanks moved up from the JV team and has proven to be solid at the varsity level.

Results of the Sept. 21 game against Milaca were not available as this issue went to press.

Up next: Foley at home on Sept. 23, 7 p.m.
