Marie Adelaide Hertenstein, the daughter of Peter and Mathilda (Pearson) Anderson, was born Jan. 22, 1913 at Rush Point, Minn. She passed into her Saviourís arms on Sept. 24, 2004.
Marie grew up on the family farm overlooking East Rush Lake in Nessel Township and was baptized and confirmed at Calvary Lutheran Church at Rush Point. When she was four years old, her mother died due to a heart condition and she was raised by her father and her uncle. She attended Nessel rural school through the eighth grade.
As a young girl, Marie taught herself to play the accordion. Her father and her brother, August, both played the violin, and the three enjoyed playing together. Marie and August loved to play at local dances.
Marie was united in marriage to Albert Eric Hertenstein on July 22, 1936, and four children were born to them.
A member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Rush City, Minn, Marie was active in the affairs of the church. She could always be depended upon to help with dinners, luncheons, and various other activities. She was also a long time member of the Rush City Womenís Club.
During their retirement years, Marie and Albert liked to go fishing and enjoyed taking rides through the countryside. They both liked to work in their garden, and Marie was always busy with some type of handiwork.
Marie died at the Hillcrest Health Care Center in Rush City at the age of 91 years.
She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law: Laverne and Ray Debevec of Pasco, Wash., Joanne Lott of Wyoming, Minn., Lois and Butch Anderson of Rush City; her son and daughter-in-law: Roy and Kathy Hertenstein of Ogilvie, Minn.; 17 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; four great great grandchildren; other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Peter and Mathilda Anderson; her husband, Albert, in September of 1991; her brother, August, and his wife, Bertha; and her grandson, Dale.
Funeral service was at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 28, at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Rush City with the Reverend Laurie OíShea and Father Xavier Thelakkott officiating. Organist was Doris Swanson and soloist was Jan Goebel. Honorary casket bearers were Scott Hertenstein and Brandon Hertenstein. Casket bearers were Marieís grandsons: Steven Anderson Matthew Hertenstein, Tony Anderson, Gene Lott, Richard Debevec, and Evan Hertenstein. Interment was at the William Taylor Cemetery in rural Rush City. Arrangements were entrusted the Olson Chapel, Funeral & Cremation Service, Rush City, Minn.
