Fairview honors local physician for humanitarian service

Posted: 4/6/05

On March 23, Fairview recognized Nancy Alexis, M.D., family practice physician at Fairview Chisago Lakes Clinic, Chisago City, for exceptional service to the community. Alexis was honored before an audience of more than 1,500 Fairview employees at the Minneapolis Convention Center as one of five finalists for Fairviewís premier service award - the Fairview Cares Award.

During the award ceremony, Alexisís dedicated service as a mission leader and board member for Volunteers in Medical Mission (VIMM) were featured in a video presentation. She also received a crystal award and $1,000 to be designated to the charity of her choice.

Alexis appeared on stage with 2005 Fairview Cares Award winner Murtice Sherek, a retired Fairview nurse who gives her time to two community clinics and also works as a volunteer for VIMM. Sherek acknowledged Alexis as the person who recruited her for her first medical mission.

Since 1989, Dr. Alexis has taken part in more than 20 medical missions to countries in Central and South America, Asia and Eastern Europe. She has organized and led 14 of those missions. In 2004, Dr. Alexis led a VIMM mission team to Guatemala and in 2005 will lead two teams--to Guatemala (April 2-16) and Tanzania (August 6-20). For the past 10 years, Dr. Alexis also has served on VIMMís national board of directors.

ìEach year, year after year, Dr. Alexis can be counted on to be planning one to two mission trips,î says Leilani Freeman, who nominated Alexis for the honor, ìQuietly, calmly and without much fanfare, she manages to obtain adequate funds, gather supplies and recruit participants,î said Freeman. ìBecause of her, many other Fairview employees - like Murtice Sherek - have become VIMM volunteers as well.î

For the past 10 years, Dr. Alexis also has served on Fairviewís Medical Missions Committee, which oversees the process that Fairview uses for allocating funds for medical mission trips. She also volunteers to provide monthly church services to prisoners at the Lino Lakes Correctional Facility. Alexis has been a family practice physician in Chisago City since 1986.

Fairview Lakes president Dan Anderson said this is the fifth time that an employee of Fairview Lakes Regional Health Care has been among the finalists for the Fairview Cares Award. Liz Alldritt, emergency room technologist, Chisago City, and Shirley Graf, R.N, of Forest Lake, are previous Fairview Cares Award recipients.

ìFairview Lakes is truly an organization of people who care,î said Anderson.
