Guest astronomer Steve Tonsfeldt returns to Wild River State Park this year for the Perseid meteor shower. The park provides good viewing conditions due to being distant from sources of light pollution. If weather conditions are good, Friday and Saturday evening provide a good chance of seeing a dozen or more meteors per hour.
Tonsfeldt will lead the meteor watch on Friday and Saturday. Telescopes will also be available for looking at other features of the night sky.
Programs begin both nights at the park's campground amphitheater at 9 p.m. Friday features a slide program of impressive sights from outer space, while Saturday features specimens of a variety of meteors plus slides of meteor craters and information about the impacts that caused them. Bring bug spray, a flashlight and binoculars and blanket if you wish for the meteor viewing after the amphitheater presentation.
