TO THE EDITOR:
As of mid-July, military action in Iraq has cost 1,750 American lives and approximately 13,000 wounded. While the Bush administration continues to insist that the operation is making progress, the facts show that the insurgents have increased their deadly attacks.
ìThings arenít getting better, they are getting worse,î according to Republican Senator Chuck Hagel of Nebraska. Numerous commentators have pointed out that continued action and the mere presence of our forces in Iraq is the stimulus for the deadly insurgency.
An Associated Press poll found that only 41 percent of Americans continue to support the administrationís handling of the war, the lowest mark since the operation began in March 2003. Many have lost confidence because it is now obvious that each of the reasons advanced to justify the action ñ Iraqís possession of weapons of mass destruction, ties to al Qaeda, and threats the to U.S. ñ have proven to be without substance. The administration should be making plans to begin the withdrawal of our forces from the area.
