Vacationers facing the high cost of gas can beat gas prices by cutting back on longer trips to other states. The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) suggests that people stay close to home and discover Minnesotaís watchable wildlife.
ìWildlife can provide exciting experiences that are fun to share with family and friends,î said Carroll Henderson, DNR Nongame Wildlife Program supervisor. Henderson suggested heading for a nearby lake. ìYou may hear the haunting call of the loon at sunset and watch bald eagles and ospreys. A quiet walk along a lakeshore might reveal a family of otters, great blue heron, kingfisher along the waterís edge, as well as ducks, beavers and muskrats.î
According to Henderson, Minnesota has thousands of acres of protected wildlife habitat that are open to wildlife viewing that offers countless opportunities that may meet budget, time and travel requirements.
More tips, maps and information on Minnesotaís most sought after wildlife are available in the ìTravelerís Guide to Wildlife in Minnesota,î authored by Carrol Henderson, Andrea Lee Lambrecht and the wildlife biologists of the DNR Nongame Wildlife Program.
The guide is available at the Minnesotaís Bookstore by calling 1-800-657-3757, at all major booksellers and in the DNRís Nature Store at the Minnesota State Fair.
