TO THE EDITOR:

Democrats for Life of America have unveiled an abortion-reduction proposal called the 95-10 Initiative intended to reduce abortions in America by 95% over the next 10 years. The proposal is broken into three categories: empowering women, defending women and protecting unborn children. The initiative is supported by pro-life Democrats in both the U.S. Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives and will be introduced in both in the near future.

The U.S. House has passed the Parental Notification Bill by a large margin on April 27, 2005. This bill makes it a federal offense to transport a minor (17 and under), across state lines to obtain an abortion, in order to evade state laws that require parental notification.

In the U.S. House the Unborn Child Pain Awareness Act has been introduced, and has many co-sponsors. The bill states that, 20 weeks or more after fertilization/conception, a mother seeking an abortion must be given information on the pain her baby will experience during the abortion and be offered anesthesia for the child. Abortion centers would have to provide a verbal statement, and also a brochure that informs the mother of the pain experienced by the unborn child 20 weeks after fertilization. This is important since the trials of the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban drew such strong attention to medical and scientific facts regarding the humanity of the unborn child, bringing to life the severity of pain experienced by the young human baby.
