Della Behrendt of Rush City died Friday, Aug. 5 as the result of a fire in her home that caused the house to be filled with thick smoke.
According to Rush City Fire Chief Bob Carlson, the call came in to the fire department shortly before 8:20 a.m. Friday.
The report was ìsmoke in the house.î
Through the use of automated mutual aid, Rush City Fire was joined by Pine City and Harris,
two rigs from Lakes Region EMS and county sheriff deputies.
Shortly after the emergency crews arrived, Behrendt was taken out of the house.
A small fire was extinguished and the state fire marshall began an investigation. The origin of the fire was pinpointed right away, Carlson said, the cause was electrical and in the basement. North Memorial helicopter was called in. Attempts to resuscitate Behrendt were unsuccessful.
A death like this affects everybody in a small town like Rush City, said Carlson. He noted that emergency personnel were on the scene until about 2 p.m. and he thanked everyone for their quick response.
Behrendt operated a beauty shop in the community for many years. Her funeral was Tuesday.
