You had to keep your gaze down toward the floor as much as up toward the basket if you hoped to follow the Rush City girlsí scrappy game against the Hinckley-Finlayson Jaguars on Dec. 8.
ìIt was a physical game. Both teams came to play,î said Jaguarsí Coach Ron Jensen in a bit of understatement.
When the bodies stopped flying at the final buzzer, Jensenís team was on top 66-52. But not without getting pressed, harassed and flustered by a pesky Tiger defense that kept RC in the game until the final five minutes.
The Jaguars went up by as many as 15 points more than once, but each time the Tigers roared back, thanks mainly to a swarming defense that forced more than 20 Jaguar turnovers. The Tigers had plenty of chances to overtake the Jaguars, but were doomed by an arid performance at the free throw line, where they shot 14 of 30.
ìPoor free throw shooting cost us again,î said Coach Jeremy Albright. ìWe battled back several times but just couldnít get over the hump.î
Amber Hoffman led the Tigersí scoring with 17 points. Senior guard Becky Kemen contributed 15 points, 9 rebounds and 5 steals in a stellar defensive performance.
Hinckley-Finlayson was playing without star Kelsey Ausmus, who was out with an injury.
