TO THE EDITOR:
I ask you, what do children do in the schoolyard sandbox when they donít get their way? Well, they kick sand in your face, pick up their toys and go home. This is what County Commissioner Lynn Schultz and her band of bullies Commissioners Robinson and Gustafson did last week at the budget meeting for Chisago County.
Instead of fully funding the agreed upon contract with East Central Regional Library, Ms. Schultz only funded an additional $5000 and directed that the Giese Memorial Library be shorted hours to make up the remaining shortfall.
Commissioner Schultz claims that we have to prove why we need to be open 40 hours a week. We have qualified staff who have looked at our population and service area and determined that this is the number of hours our library needs to open and to properly serve the community.
Commissioner Schultz has us not using the library before we even have a chance to use it.
Furthermore anytime a county has had to cut library services, those cuts were made across the board, not directed at one particular area or district as she has done.
Never in my 20 years of living in Chisago County have I witnessed such vindictive, petty politics. This decision was not about money, make no mistake about it ñ these commissioners had no problem spending more than $100,000 out of the contingency fund except when it came to the library. This was purely to get back at Commissioner Montzka and our district for having the courage to fight for our fair share and to get a library in our community.
As far as I am concerned these three individuals should resign from their position, they donít deserve the title of county commissioner or understand the word ìcounty.î
