Gordon Wesley Palmquist, age 75 of North Branch, Minn., formerly of Turlock, Calif., died on Saturday, Dec. 3, 2005 at the Veteranís Administration Hospital in Minneapolis, Minn.
Gordon was born on April 25, 1930 in Turlock, Calif. to Clarence and Gladys (Edling) Palmquist. He grew up in Turlock and was baptized into Calvary Baptist Church. He graduated from Turlock High School and attended Bethel College in St. Paul, Minn. He graduated from the University of California Fresno with a BS degree in mechanical engineering.
He work at Marc Island Naval Ship Yard on nuclear submarines. After five years he decided to go to Bethel Seminary and the family moved to St. Louis Park, Minn. He attended Bethel for two years and while at seminary he worked for Bros on heavy construction machinery.
After Bros he worked for Erickson Corp. on fork lifts. When Erickson went out of business he moved back to Turlock/Modesto, Calif. in 1981. He worked at FMC in San Jose, Calif. until he retired in 1990 because of FMC shutdown in San Jose.
Retirement brought many trips back to Lake Vermilion, Minn. where he had a cabin by the lake. Gordon lived to travel and visit friends and relatives. While attending Bethel College he met his bride to be Janet. They were married in September of 1956 and had three children: Melinda, Darryl and Suzan.
Gordon loved working on automobiles, fixing and rebuilding them. Building an addition onto his cabin and finishing the downstairs of his Spring Lake Park home. He loved going to church and worshiping with fellow believers. Before his illness took over he and his wife attended Sunrise Baptist Church in Sunrise, Minn. Gordon loved getting into the care and traveling cross country, getting into his boat on the lake of Minnesota and mainly Lake Vermilion.
Gordon is survived by his wife Janet, daughters Melinda (Louis) Wilson of Tennessee, Suzan Singleton of North Branch, and son Darryl of Minneapolis; his sister Clarice Mae (Robert) Mathison; five grandchildren: Arren, Emily, Erik, Kyle and Trevor; many cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Ronald.
Funeral services will be held today, Wednesday, Dec. 7, at 11 a.m. at the Grandstrand Funeral Home in North Branch, with Rev. George Cable officiating. Interment will be in Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis.
