TO THE EDITOR:
In my opinion, Mr. Tepoorten is correct, making a statement like ìBush lied and American soldiers diedî is a political statement. I donít believe Bush lied.
However, I do know that the Bush administration mislead the American public with statements like ìBut we do know, with absolute certainty, that he (Saddam) is using his procurement system to acquire the equipment he needs in order to enrich uranium to build a nuclear weaponî (Cheney, Sept. 8, 2002) was misleading.
We also know that more than 2,100 American soldiers have died and more than 100,000 Iraqis as a result of Mr. Bushís decision to invade Iraq. We also know that the majority of the American public does not support this war and that if the American public had been asked to pay for the war, as we did in WWII, it is unlikely that they would have supported it at all.Ý
This war will not achieve either the goal of greater security for America or peace in Iraq. Further, there is increasing evidence that corporations in which Bush and Cheney have been CEOs are directly benefiting from this War, namely Dresser and Halliburton. Further, that both were previously involved in arming Saddam and that in the current conflict, both have overcharged the American public. The bottom line for me is that Bushís decision to invade Iraq has resulted in the death of more than 2,100 without achieving the goal of creating peace in Iraq or greater security at home.
So in many ways, to argue that there is a difference between lying and misleading is a little like Clinton saying ìI didnít have sex with that woman,î except that the former has costed American taxpayersÝmore than 100 billion dollars and the lives of 2,100Ýsoldiers and the latter nearly costed Clinton the presidency.
