Police chase ends with damaged squad car

Posted: 2/16/05

What started as a reckless driver situation on a snowy and icy Sunday night on I-35 ended up with car chase and a getaway.

At about 9:30 p.m. the State Patrol and the Chisago County Sheriffís Department were preparing to attempt to pull over a speeding 4-wheel drive pickup when the vehicle fled the scene, according to a report from captain Doug Sampson of the sheriffís department.

The vehicle fled off the freeway at the Harris exit. The Sheriffís Department and the State Patrol pursued the truck as it sped through Harris and through Rush City. The truck turned at the Rush City Airport where it attempted to lose the squad cars, the report said.

As the truck was making a move to leave the airport the squad cars attempted to block it in. That move proved unsuccessful when the truck rammed into sheriffís department squad cars and fled north to Pine City. The squad cars lost the truck.

Later, Pine County spotted the truck near Hinckley but also lost it.
Sampson said that no one was able to see the license plate number on the truck, as conditions were blizzardesque.
