Governing a city in a politically charged environment can be challenging for even the most seasoned mayor or city council member, and managing difficult and demanding areas of conflict ñ inside and outside city hall ñ can make city leadership a tough balancing act.
Thatís why city officials from throughout the state, including North Branch Councilwoman Amy Oehlers, recently took part in a two-day Leadership Conference for Experienced Officials presented by the League of Minnesota Cities.
Conference workshop sessions focused on:
Helping city officials identify and respond positively to conflict; build effective leadership skills; create positive media relations; strike a work-life balance, and access available League resources and information for help with everyday concerns and challenges.
The Leadership Conference for Experienced Officials was facilitated by Craig Rapp, who has worked for more than 25 years in the public and private sector. He has served as city manager for three cities, community development director for the Metropolitan Council, managing principal of a planning and urban design firm, and president of his own consulting firm.
The League of Minnesota Cities is a non-profit, membership organization dedicated to helping cities throughout Minnesota build quality communities through effective advocacy, expert analysis, trusted guidance, and collective action. The League serves its more than 800 members through advocacy, education and training, policy development, risk management and other services.
