Last week the Rush City girls knocked off Onamia, the #2 team in the conference, but came up short in their effort against #1 Braham, which remains undefeated in conference play.
The Tigers put together four solid quarters in downing Onamia 50-39 on Jan. 25. They never trailed in the game and held Onamia to only 6 points in the first quarter.
ěWe came out and played with a lot of intensity right from the start,î said Coach Stuart Lang. ěThe crowd played a big role in our victory. The student section gave the gym a great atmosphere to play in.î
The Tigers mounted a balanced scoring attack featuring senior Breann Stottler and juniors Heather Dean and Bobbi Cort. Stottler racked up 11 points, 6 assists and 8 rebounds while Dean added 13 points. Cort put in 9 points and snared 10 rebounds.
The contest against Braham was closer than the score would indicate. Free throws made the difference in the game; the Tigers committed 18 personal fouls and Braham responded by shooting 69 percent from the charity stripe. The Tigersí leading scorer, Holly Dean (13 points, 6 rebounds), fouled out of the game and three other players each had three fouls.
Rush City outpaced the Bombers from the field, shooting at a 40 percent clip to Brahamís 27 percent.
The Tigers stayed nearly even with Braham on rebounds as well, grabbing 25 to the Bombersí 27.
ěThere were a couple of momentum swings that didnít go our way. Both teams played very hard and up until about the last two minutes, the game could have gone either way,î said Coach Lang.
Lang praised the play of Bobbi Cort, who turned in her third consecutive strong game, scoring 10 points and 7 rebounds. Becky Kemen also scored 10 points with 3 rebounds.
