Arthur Theodore Schultz

Arthur Theodore Schultz, age 90, formerly of Rock Creek and more recently of Pine City, Minn., died Monday, Jan. 3, 2005 at the Lakeside Nursing Home in Pine City.

He was born Feb. 9, 1914 in St. Paul, Minnesota and was the son of Theodore and Ida (Luhrsen) Schultz. At the age of one year, he moved with his family to Heidelberg, Minn. When Art was six years old, the Schultz family purchased a farm in St. Paul in the area that is now Roseville, Minnesota.

In 1933, Art graduated from high school at the School of Agriculture, University of Minnesota, St. Paul Campus. He then enrolled in the University of Minnesota School of Agriculture and studied agronomy and botany. Following graduation in 1939, Art worked on the family farm for a time before becoming employed with the United States Department of Agriculture. Later he worked at the Minnesota Highway Department.

Art married the former Gladys Erickson from Starkweather, North Dakota in 1943.

In 1947, Art began teaching agriculture courses to veterans at Foley, Minnesota. During his teaching career there he also served five years as a scoutmaster in the scouting program sponsored by the Gustavus Adolphus Church.

Art and Gladys purchased a farm in Rock Creek in 1954. Art raised broiler chickens and in 1958 he purchased the feed mill in Rock Creek. Besides operating the feed mill, Art also raised hogs until the time of his retirement in 1975.

Instrumental in starting the Soil Conservation District in 1958, Art remained active in soil conservation for a period of 40 years. He further served his community as a 4-H leader for 24 years, and was actively involved in incorporating the Township of Rock Creek as a city in 1970. He was an active member of the Gideons, Farm Bureau, and Senior Singers, and until suffering a stroke in 2000, he was active in his church and a Bible study at Lakeside. As an author, he wrote a book on the history of Rock Creek and his autobiography for his children and grandchildren.

Art is survived by his wife, Gladys; daughter and son-in-law: Carol and John Lyons of River Falls, Wisc.; son and daughters-in-law: Don and Bobbie Schultz, and Lorraine Schultz, all of Pine City; grandchildren: Darrin, Doug, and Denise Schultz, Jeremy, Jessica, and Jennifer Schultz, Alana and Daniel Zbaren; nine great great grandchildren; his sisters Gladys Freeman, Irene Jensen, and Eleanor Schultz, all of St. Paul; several nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Theodore and Ida Schultz, and his son, Dennis Schultz.

Funeral service was at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 6, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Pine City with Pastors Vicki Vander Vegt and Greg Gritz officiating. Organist for the service was Glenna Reierson and soloist was Pastor Gritz. Honorary casket bearers were Darrin Schultz, Dan Zbaren, Russell Anderson, David Nelson, Mahlon Johnson, and Mel Shoberg. Casket bearers were Jeremy Schultz, Doug Schultz, Nathan Schultz, James Freeman, John Lyons, Richard Erickson, Lyle Jensen, and John Zbaren. Interment was at the Rock Creek Cemetery in Rock Creek. Arrangements were entrusted to the Swanson Chapel, Funeral & Cremation Service, Pine City, Minnesota.
