The North Branch boys hockey Vikings defeated the Princeton junior varsity 3-1 on Jan. 7.
North Branchís Tony Watters started the scoring directly on the heels of the face-off at 14:25 in the first period. Jake Lane had the assist.
Princetonís Ryan Kotnik, with an assist by Peter Givenwood, countered with 5:36 in the period to tie the game at 1-1. But the Vikingsí Lane responded with a goal 2 minutes later to take the lead for good.
The final goal came with 9 seconds left in the 3rd period on a shot by Chris Courtney.
North Branch was able to put only 13 players on the ice due to illness. That resulted in all freshmen and sophomores getting ice time. Coach Jon Sarago praised his team for pulling out the win despite being shorthanded.
Princeton racked up 10 minutes in the penalty box on five fouls. North Branch sat out 8 minutes on three penalties.
Shots on goal: North Branch 34, Princeton 28.
