Rush City wrestlers posted a 2-1 record at the Melrose Quad Jan. 4, defeating Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa and Melrose and losing to section foe Paynesville.

Meanwhile, on Jan. 8 the Tigers placed 5th out of 9 teams at the Ogilvie invitational. Coach Tim Bowland attributed the mediocre finish to lackluster performances in the opening rounds.

ìWe just need to wrestle better in the opening rounds.Our kids have a tough time preparing for these morning starts and we need to address that in the practice room,î Bowland said.

Howsever, there were bright spots for Rush City:
-Richard Marohn earned the championship in the 125-pound class while Adam Morris was a runner up at 145 pounds.
-Noah Reichert went 2-2 to finish in third place at 112 pounds.
-James Fleming placed 5th. During his match he popped his shoulder out and continued to wrestle, gaining a 3-point nearfall with 15 seconds remaining.
-Tim Allerton went 2-2 on the day, defeating a Mille Lacs opponent who had defeated him earlier in the year. He placed 4th.
-Adam Best wrestled despite being ill. He later found out that he has pneumonia and will be out for awhile.
-Tyler Schommer went 1-2 on the day and placed 4th at 160 pounds.
-Ray Grabau saw his first action in almost a month following injury and illness, going 2-2 and finishing 5th.
-Luke Carlson had a pin and won his 5th place match.
-Jason Perkins wrestled in his first competition and placed 5th.
