The North Branch girls basketball team climbed into third place in the Rum River Conference last week with wins over Zimmerman and Big Lake.
The Vikings beat Zimmerman 42-32 in spite of a frustrating night of shooting. ìThe basket seemed to have a lid on it for us,î said Coach Dan Schindler, noting that at one point his team had 38 shots to the Thunderís 10 but the score was tied.
The North Branch defense proved to be the key to the victory, and the offense provided just enough punch in the 4th quarter to pull out the win. Trailing by two points going into the 4th, North Branch outscored Zimmerman 16-4 on the strength of a 3-pointer by Tiffany Good and 5 of 6 free throws by Gabrielle Olson.
Olson was the leading scorer with 11 points and 7 steals. Good scored 9 and grabbed 7 rebounds, and Jenny Olson scored 8 with 13 rebounds. Jill VandenHeuvel added 8 points and 9 rebounds.
The outcome of the Big Lake contest was never in doubt, as the Vikings won 51-29. Big Lake was held to 8 points in the first half, allowing nearly all the players to see action in the second half. Olson led the team in scoring with 17. Kacie Ramberg, Ashley Klein, Marlayna Graff and KristenRobatcek did a solid job coming off the bench.
The Vikings are 7-2 in the conference and 11-5 overall.
